Title: F-Zero: Maximum Velocity
Review rating: **1/2
Platform/console: GameBoy Advance
Release date: June 2001
Genre: Racing
Players allowed: 1 to 4 (links)
ESRB rating: E
Production company: Nintendo

A decent title that could’ve used some more bells and whistles, but satisfies overall. You’re allowed three different names and can link through single or multiple paks. The difficulty ranges from pawn to knight to bishop in these power-based races.

You must rely on getting necessary resources just as much as keeping you finger on the accelerator button if you want to succeed. The green strips recharge your power, but slow you down and the edges take your power away if you bump into them. Playing bumper cars will also wear down your power, but well timed nudges may be necessary to win a race sometimes.

A bonus for the amount of power left would reward players for being resourceful, but designers failed to include this reward. The absence of special bonuses and a storyline are minor flaws because the racing elements in this game remain fairly strong. The navigation could’ve used a little bit of improvement too, especially within the menus like trying to back out of menu options.
